Cooling, Coolant Storage & Distribution

You have a variety of options for proper cooling of your test cell. Your Coolant Storage and Distribution System must take into account your test cell layout, the amount of coolant required by the engine and capabilities of the engine and pumps.

Here’s a look at some of the cooling system components we can provide.

Closed Loop Cooling Center (CLCC)

Designed to operate within the flow parameters and heat rejection rates of 1,250, 2,500, 4,250 and 6,000 hp (932, 1,864, 3,169 and 4,474 kW) engines, a CLCC allows you to use a glycol (water-based) coolant to regulate the jacket or after-cooler coolant temperature and pressure of an engine while cooling it with the facility process water.

The advantage of glycol is that you are operating the engine closer to its typical conditions. In addition, the residual coolant in the engine provides the engine with corrosion and freeze protection without any additional processing steps.

The CLCC uses a heat exchanger (liquid-to-liquid) and temperature sensor to control and monitor the jacket water temperature. It also includes a coolant pump within the enclosure to fill and empty the engine before and after testing. A coolant tank of suitable capacity is required to complete the system.

Additional Cooling Components

  • Cooling Column – For applications up to 4,250 hp (3,169 kW), our large pressurized cooling columns regulate the jacket temperature and pressure of the engines being tested.
  • Low Temperature After-Cooler (LTA) – Designed to regulate the secondary water circuit temperature on engines that use an onboard liquid-to-liquid heat exchanger (other than jacket water) to cool charge air.
  • Hose Interconnect Kit – Specially designed for quick connect and disconnect between the engines and cooling column and ⁄ or LTA.
  • Charge Air Cooler – A temperature controller with full PID autotuning.
  • Automatic Day Tank – Keeps coolant at the ready while conserving space.
